A Preview…

One of Annie’s many lives. She navigated this one without her friends. She found herself being labeled a witch, during the darkest period in Massachusetts history.

“One moment she was ironically on her hands and knees, scrubbing floors and the next, she was facing a jury of her so-called peers. How did she get here?

She touched one of her calloused fingertips onto the rough ropes that were bound around her hands, immediately burning a hole through them. She was careful to concentrate the heat on one minute area, so that the entire length did not go up in flames and her right along with it. Her red hands were slightly numb due to sitting in this position for several hours. Hesitantly, she craned her neck and noticed no one guarding the exit. The guard was finding happiness in liquid form, so she watched the other ropes drop to the floor as she untied herself. Good port was her key to an unobscured escape, so she watched the stranger drink it down before she tiptoed through the exit and toward the rear of the property.

Life as a maid, who was more slave than employee had her life feeling more like a warning than relief. She could not escape her employers and all that came along with taking care of them. But, she also could not fight the feeling that something was looming around every corner. This paranoia had her discovering that she could bring fire from her fingertips. She often lit the dark path to the outhouse at night and luckily no one ever noticed.

Her heart pounded so hard that she was sure the woodland creatures could hear it. She felt like a deadman walking, since she was set for execution in the morning. Annie had nowhere to turn as her barely used fingertip returned to a normal temperature, but that was not going to stop her. She did not dare to ignite her hands to light the way, because they would be a beacon for the town to spot her.

Annie did not know what she was, but everything that stood for doom or witchcraft had been hurled at her by the townspeople. The townspeople had a quick, off the books, trial for her and 30 minutes later she was sentenced to have her head shaved, (a strange power was said to be held in the hair of a witch) drowned and then burned at the stake. The explanation for her flaming hands was decided to be either voodoo, sorcery or witchcraft and she did not believe any of it about herself. She felt elevated every time she accessed a part of her that was unlike those around her. She could see that life had to get better, since anyone she had ever read about in childhood books, that cast spells or performed magic, were needed by kings and queens.

Life in 1693, while residing in Ipswich Massachusetts had people in authority living with quite a bit of bravado, as they decided who was a threat and who wasn’t. Annie was a scullery maid who scrubbed floors until her hands bled, for the local pastor, his wife and their 5 children. Her own parents had died in a crossing from China to the Americas. A missionary woman on board the ship took pity on her and decided that 5 years old was plenty old enough to scrub plates and utensils, so her job began right then and there.

Annie masqueraded as their ward, but she was truly a maid who was more slave than employee. She had no room of her own, but that was not the worst part of her circumstance. People of that time who were of an “elevated status” did not take care of their own hygiene. The pastor was ugly as sin and he had no desire to bathe regularly, so when it came time for his monthly bath, it was enough to make Annie nearly vomit.”
